Ashleigh Fizer, Administrative Assistant, Graduate Medical Education

I have worked for the GME program as a staff assistant since August 2006. Prior to working for the GME office, I served as staff assistant in CAMC’s Continuing Education Department. I learn something new about GME everyday and look forward to learning even more. When I'm not working here, I hold a part-time job at the Charleston YMCA, a position I have held since 2003, working mostly with children. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my boyfriend of three years, Eddie, or shopping with friends. Before coming to CAMC, I was a student at West Virginia State University majoring in Elementary Education; however, I have since decided that teaching may not be the career for me and I’m taking some time off to consider my next steps. I have a miniature dachshund named Bonzo and two nieces which I absolutely adore. I am the fourth of six children.

Gordon Green, MD, Graduate Medical Education Specialist

My training in the delivery of medical education began in 1995 when I completed a one-year Teaching Fellowship at the University of British Columbia. I was then able to gain valuable teaching experience while working clinically in the area of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and took on the role of Director of Medical Education for the Emergency Department here at CAMC. While there I completed a year long Teaching Scholars Program at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV and had the great fortune to participate in both the Programs for Leaders in Medical Education and for Physician Educators offered by the Harvard Macy Institute. I have continued to serve as a returning faculty scholar for these programs intermittently over the past few years.

My interest in developing new learning methods and applying them in a practical manner took me to St. Matthew’s University in Grand Cayman. Having to live in the Caribbean for 3 years was a challenge that my family and I suffered through. My role as Chief Academic Office there allowed me to apply what I had learned, to evaluate and to revise learning methodologies. Having gained this experience, I have learned many lessons (some I do not wish to repeat), and am now better prepared to bring theory to life.

My primary interest at this point is trying to integrate various learning and evaluation methodologies to ensure that competencies are not only met, but that what is learned through the process is used to improve the process itself. I am particularly interested in the growing role of simulation in medical education and have entered a steep learning curve as the Medical Director for the Simulation Center at Charleston Area Medical Center. This cutting-edge facility provides the structure for the development of the types of activities that will hopefully lead to more efficient and effective learning and ultimately safer patient care in the future.

My real job begins after 5 p.m. when I get to spend time with Connell (15, and still talks to me), Brock (always smiling at 13), and Maude (9, a true Princess), and my wife Jo-Anne. I have realigned my parenting perspective from one of trying to control the direction of my children to one of being thankful for getting a chance to ride along side of them. We have hockey, soccer, gymnastics, dance and acting, at least 5 times per week. Life is busy…and definitely too short!

Stephanie Mason-Casto, BS, Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education Coordinator

I have been with the GME office since  May 2001 and have worked with residents from both allopathic and osteopathic programs.  I am also the Osteopathic Coordinator here at CAMC.  In July 2006 the Urological Surgery Residency started and in July 2007 the Emergency Medicine Residency will start. Working as the Osteopathic Coordinator and helping with the development of these two new programs, I have  had the opportunity to learn a great deal in the last couple of years.  The development of Osteopathic programs at CAMC continues to grow and flourish and I have enjoyed being a part of that.

On the personal side of my life, I have been married to Kevin since May of 2001.  We have no children, just nieces and nephews, which seem like our own.  We enjoy taking them camping and fishing and spending time with them. We have  two dog s, a peek-a-shoo (Pekingese and Shih Tzu mix) named Dakoda and a Pekingese named Blondie.    Dakoda enjoys riding on the motorcycle with us and Blondie likes to be rocked in your arms like a baby. Besides camping with the kids and riding the motorcycle with the dog, we also enjoy spending time with our families.

Jeri Whitten, Residency Coordinator, Pediatrics
I am a native West Virginian and love the laid-back lifestyle and friendly, wholesome people who live here.  On the professional side, I have had the pleasure of working for more than 33 years in medical education, the last 30 in Pediatrics. I have been fortunate to see so many scared new residents turn into happy, confident physicians.  Nothing gives me more pleasure than to receive baby pictures or wedding pictures from one of my graduates.   I currently serve on the National Executive Committee for Pediatric Residency Coordinators, a section of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors, and was Chair of the Steering Committee responsible for securing Pediatric Coordinators section status in the APPD.  My husband, Greg, and I have been married for 35 years and have one son, Sean.  We are cat lovers and have three, Tigger, Bitty and Callie.  Greg and I are huge race fans and enjoy attending several NASCAR races each year (GO 24!!!).  We love the outdoors, camping, fishing and being in the woods.  I am active in the community, having served on the Board of Directors of the Charleston Ronald McDonald House since it’s inception (first as Secretary and then President), and currently Chair the Grants Committee for our local Ronald McDonald House Charities.  Phone number (304) 388-1563.  E-mail jwhitten@hsc.wvu.edu
