The concept of combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry postgraduate training for physicians began in West Virginia.  The Charleston Division of West Virginia University School of Medicine was the second such residency program in the United States.  For over 35 years, our Institution has maintained a strong commitment to the concept of combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry training. Our program is now the longest continuously operating Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residency in the United States. Graduates of our program are now active in many areas of medical practice, ranging from academia to private practice.

This particular program is designed to provide a comprehensive, well-rounded and balanced training to residents in the fields of Medicine/Psychiatry and in the areas of overlap which occur in these fields.

The training is designed to prepare graduates for diverse oppurtunities in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, combined practice, or fellowships in either field.

Strengths of the program include experienced med-psych faculty, both of whom are graduates of our program, working in both departments to oversee the program and coordinate the training between the two departments.  The Chief Medicine/Psychiatry resident position provides visibility and leadership among housestaff officers.  The longevity of the program provides a mature and stable training environment.  The program includes a combined Med/Psych Clinic under the direction of the Med-Psych faculty to enhance integrated clinical experiences.

The large Charleston Area Medical Center facilities, long standing cooperative relationships between the Internal Medicine and Psychiatry departments, program leadership and stability, and a collegial academic atmosphere contribute to making the combined Med/Psych residency at CAMC a unique and rewarding experience.

Applications are accepted through the AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) only.
